Ready or Not…. Winter is Coming

As I hear people lament the emergence of cold weather and say goodbye to the heat of summer, I quietly celebrate. My pale Eastern European skin is thrilled to no longer be lathered in sunscreen. My love of sleep is welcoming the early sunset. And, my menopausal body is relishing the crisp morning air.

As the days get shorter, I enjoy the extra time to ease into my bedtime routine. As the days get colder, I crave afternoon tea with sugar and milk. I eagerly await snuggling under the covers before bed with a book and my dog. Making soup, stew and chili is the best way to make the home smell amazing. And blankets on the couch make everything cozy.

Every year I text my daughter when the Rockefeller tree is in transit to NYC. This is the moment I know the holidays are on their way. Holiday music and decorations, Charlie Brown specials, turkey and stuffing, mittens, cookie swaps, secret santas, menorahs and the Chanukah blessings. These are things I look forward to.

If you are like me and secretly prefer the colder months, I hope you feel seen here. If you hate winter, I hope I have given some ideas for things to enjoy. Wintering by Katherine May May is a beautiful book to read any time, but especially now with the approach of winter. Here is a blog she wrote which gives you a taste of her relationship to winter.
